While it's true that fruit juice is generally healthy but, in the case of diabetes, it contains far too much simple sugar, oftentimes added high fructose corn syrup or HFCS, to be safe to drink... many more carbs than the fruits which from which the juice was extracted. All of these recommendations, of course, are subject to individual factors and how much you have your blood sugar level in hand. If your blood sugar levels are controlled and you are easily able to keep them in a safe range, then you can occasionally treat yourself to a 'forbidden' food in a small or moderate serving size without much risk.

However, if you have a hard time keeping lower blood sugar levels, then some of the foods listed here as being acceptable in limited quantities, may be enough to push your blood sugar levels over the edge. Diabetes struck very close to home for me. One family friend has suffered with diabetes for many years. He is now on dialysis, has had most of one leg removed and the other leg may have to come off too. Another friend was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes several years ago but he largely ignored the condition.

His weight topped out at over 350 pounds, yet on a daily basis he drank a liter or more of sugar loaded soft drinks. And there is no telling how many candy bars he consumed each day-along with a litany of other junk foods. He died from congestive heart failure, kidney and liver complications. My own wife, God love her, was diagnosed with pre-diabetes (borderline). She-on the other hand-showed total commitment to conquer the problem. She began a very strict low carbohydrate diet, cut out sugar completely and works out regularly at the gym.
